Psalm 46

A friend sent these words of encouragement and I wanted to share them with you:

In Psalm 46 it says that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.” I know that this can be uttered very glibly at times by people who never fail to take out insurance! but the rest of the verse is mindblowing… “therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”  I figure that when the earth is giving way so badly that we can’t stand up on your own any more “therefore, we will not fear” is a mighty big declaration for a weak, helpless speck of humanity like you and me and the psalmist to make. But as one speck to another, we know that the might that this verse is truly declaring is the might of God who is more than a match for these calamities, and moreover filled with such lovingkindness towards us,  or “hesed”   as it says in the Hebrew, a word I happen to love.
