Green Bananas

with 21 comments

My Granddad (Mum’s Dad) died shortly after his ninetieth birthday. He had a good sense of humour right up until the last. I remember him telling me how two of his friends had tried to get him involved in a speculative real estate deal that was supposed to turn a huge profit in two years. Granddad (in his eighties) said, “Two years! You’re kidding. At my age I don’t even buy green bananas.

I had another meeting with my medical consultant today and the news is not good.  The results of my last bone marrow biopsy were so bad that it is clear that a transplant is not an option (nor would it have made any difference to have gone ahead with the transplant as planned previously).  From the doctor’s point of view, there is still some chemo they can give me to keep me going a little longer, but without a miracle it is unlikely that I will make it beyond six months.

This may not be the best forum for delivering such news but (ever the optimist) I like to think that I have so many friends, so many people that have made life so good for me, that I don’t have time to ring you all 🙂

I can truly say that I am trusting God in all this. God willing, I may yet surprise my doctors.

      • I was wondering who you were saying I should give a telling off to 🙂 (2Thes. 3:15). One verse on seems to better fit our situation.

  5. This is not what we wanted to hear for our Son in Law, and we are devastated, but as Tarnya’s family, we will be there to support them all,and we gain some comfort from the fact that the Lord works in mysterious ways, and we live in hope. XXXXXXXXXX

  6. We used to sing a song back in SA that goes as follows,

    Whose report will you believe?
I will believe the report of the Lord!(repeat)
His report says, I am saved
His report says, I am healed
His report says, I am free
I will believe the report of the Lord!

So we will continue to maintain a positive attitude with you, and pray for the two of you and the children

  7. At such a time as this we are amazed at your sense of humour David…you haven’t changed a bit.
We continue in prayer for you & nothing is impossible with an Almighty God. He still hears prayer & answers them too but not always in the way we might ask or think. But this doesn’t stop us from continuing & you have wonderful perseverance so needed in the Christian life.
Our special love to Tarnya, your good self & the whole family.

  8. Hey you guys, this isn’t what we were wanting to read. But we do know we all live by the grace of an Almighty God and it is only He who knows what the future holds for each of us. David, you just continue to challenge and encourage us all in our Christian walk – thank you. We do pray for you all daily, be assured of that. Keep trusting, we’ll keep praying and let’s prove the doctors wrong (I’m sure they wouldn’t mind 🙂

  13. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Acts 20.24

  14. We are saddened to hear that your condition has deteriorated and that the outlook is bleak, however isn’t it wonderful that as Christians we have HOPE in our precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Imagine facing such a trial without Him! David, there must be great comfort in the fact that you have chosen the right path. You have served the Lord faithfully and have encouraged so many with your pastoring, teaching and proclaiming the Word of Truth. May you know His presence and peace as you walk through this dark valley.
Psalm 91:1-2 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ” He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust”
Great to see that your humour and quick wit are still with you!
Our love and prayers for you and your family at this time.

  15. Hi David,Tarnya and family. Will continue to pray for God’s ongoing revelation of His glory and power in your lives. Ex.14:13&14 (vs 14 is great in the amplified version) & Ps 130:7 is awesome in the Living Bible. Abundant blessings.

  16. David and Tarnya – I’m so sorry to hear this gloomy forecast. What a sobering reminder that this world is not the way that it should be – and that there’s a way that it should be. One day. I just wish we didn’t have to endure this heartbreaking stuff until then. Your family is in our prayers down here.
